Planning and Design

Should your basement decor be in a contemporary, traditional, or rustic style-or something else? The answer depends on the style of your home and how the rest of your home is designed. Your basement remodel plans should fit the style and design of the rest of your home like natural extension.

What features would best fit your intended purpose for remodeling your basement? Would you like to conceal ductwork or ceiling pipes with a drop ceiling? Bedrooms are best placed on the perimeter with access to an outside window. A theater room would work well away from the perimeter and away from window light that could cast a glare on the screen. Will the path to your snack area collide with the TV viewing area and disturb those glued to the screen? Do your floors and walls need to be kid and pet friendly? Plan and design your basement remodeling project to fit the need.

Are all of your basement’s waterproofing needs fixed? Will you need to double up on sump pumps to keep your basement dry during the storm seasons?

Our design experts will have dependable advice and creative basement remodeling ideas for you to consider. Cross Contracting is here to help you custom design and finish your basement renovation project for your unique situation.

Basement Flooring

Basement floors are the lowest floors in the house and need special consideration before installation. The ground surface needs to be dry, smooth and level. Moist air is heavy and drops to the basement. Hopefully your heating and cooling system is equipped with a dehumidifier. If not, you will need to address possible moisture issues before installing new basement flooring. A portable dehumidifier could be a simple solution.

Many clients choose Carpet for their remodeled basement because it is warm and quiet. Low-pile carpeting such as Berber carpet is looped and shows less wear than the shag or cut looped types of carpeting. Carpet is a nice choice if you do not have moisture issues. Will a moisture-resistant pad need to be underneath your carpet to guard against liquid spills or pet accidents?

Vinyl flooring is a great maintenance-free basement flooring choice. There is a plethora of choices and styles to choose from. Vinyl flooring installs beautifully over a concrete slab that is smooth and level.
Ceramic Tile also installs well over a smooth, level concrete slab and comes in many colors and styles to fit in with your décor. If you think you might have any condensation issues, you may consider ceramic tile with an anti-slip finish.

That concrete floor can be stained or painted and is a simple budget friendly basement flooring solution. If you choose to paint your floor, an acrylic formula with a slip-resistant surface finish would be an excellent choice. You could also coat your basement floor with an epoxy coating system that is far more durable that paint or stain.

There are other flooring options such as laminate and engineered wood that could fit your basement remodeling plans. Our design experts have knowledge and experience regarding basement floor options and are eager to offer advice and direction.
